Kansas Ethanol Facts

 

According to a 2010 Kansas Legislative Research Department Report the Ethanol industry contributes to the Kansas economy:

• In 2009, Kansas ethanol production provided over $2 million in real property taxes and nearly $100,000 in personal property taxes.
   

• Ten of the twelve ethanol plants reported their full-time employee count for a total of 328 jobs provided by the industry.
   

• An average annual payroll is nearly $2 million for each plant in Kansas.
   

• In 2008 each plant used an average14.5MB of grain – providing a market for local grain producers and producing distillers’ grain feed product for livestock producers.
   

• The ethanol industry paid nearly $53 million in trucking in CY 2007.
   

• It is estimated that in 2008 the ethanol industry spent between $516- $682 million on grain; creating a value-added opportunity for rural agricultural communities in Kansas.
   

• Ethanol lowers gasoline prices by .27%, thus saving the consumer approximately $270 million annually.
   

• A total of $616 million was spent on construction and start-up costs by the nine plants that reported such costs, which averages out to about $68.5 million per plant.
   

• A 100 million gallon ethanol plant results in:

  • $150 million in capitol construction investment;

  • $70 million to the economy during construction;

  • $233 million expansion of the local economic base year;

  • 45 direct jobs plus 101 indirect jobs in the area;

  • grain prices are raised by some $.10 a bushel;

  • tax revenues of $3.2 million per year.

   

Note: All ten Kansas Association of Ethanol Processors member plants currently can produce approximately 500 million gallons per year (MGY), which is an average of about 50 MGY per plant.
